Concert of the Year? Damn right!

To my mate, Jason, over their in the great country, thanks very much for sending this through to me…trust me, I will be there!

One of the most poignant albums of our time

Roger Waters, to me the answer to the immortal line “By the way, which one is Pink?” is planning a trip Down Under once again to perform his immortal production, made into an album and movie, The Wall. For anyone who is anyone, “Another Brick In The Wall” defined a childhood, but for the majority that is probably where their Pink Floyd experience ends. For the true blue amongst us, The Wall is a rock opera with no match. The album is musically, and metaphorically brilliant, and the movie (whether under the influence or not) is an opening to one’s own place in the greater scheme of things.

I saw The Floyd (minus Waters) play at Western Springs back in the late 80s, and Roger Waters perform “Dark Side” a few years back at North Harbour Stadium, but The Wall will be something special. I have seen the movie so many times, seen clips from their once only tour, and Roger Waters’ reprisal of it at the Brandenburg Gates on the collapse of the Berlin Wall.

Mark my words, if you can, get there. If you can’t, don’t complain. For each of us personally there are a few must dos when it comes to music – I have done most of mine; Joss Stone, Joe Satriani (three times), Deep Purple (twice), Iron Maiden (twice), Eric Clapton, Dire Straits and others…and now Roger himself will give me the second of the ultimate double-header – Dark Side and The Wall! OK, it isn’t the full Floyd (and can never be) but hell, who cares!?

The only issue I have with this is the Auckland date (20 Feb 12) is set to be held in the Vector Arena…WTF??!! Which brainless gorm came up with that? Surely this extravaganza should be held outdoors, and with February traditionally our warmest time of year those risks are lessened. So, do I dare consider Melbourne instead? Or both? I did this with Mick Jagger when he did his solo tour with Jimmy Ripp and Joe Satriani in tow – awesome seeing them twice in the week. Maybe again?
