Porn vs. Art – Is There a Difference…?

Yesterday I was in Rangiora returning a book (Gary Larson’s Far Side, funny) and had a funny little situation..

First, for those who don’t know Rangiora, or the library at all, I need to explain something. Outside the library itself is a sculpture of a rather large black man in a sumo-type position. The first photo shows the view you would normally see as you came in from the road. However, on inspection you will note the man is not wearing any shorts or undies, and in fact has his ‘wife’s best friend’ on show for all and sundry…it is cold down these parts which explains the relative size, but make no bones about it (no pun intended), it is obvious.

Rather intimidating...

So, as I wandered up the footpath and elderly woman came out of the library towards me – the view from my angle is just the man, her view shows the full tackle as clear as the nose on my face. What was funny was her initial glance as she acknowledged the sculpture but then the round-eyed gasp of a second take when she realised it wasn’t in fact a cellphone in his pocket. But this is where I almost lost it…she wandered across the grass to get a closer look at the thing but then noticed me coming towards her and quickly tried to make it look like she was taking a short-cut rather embarrassed at being caught perving. As I passed, trying not to make it obvious, I said “Shrinkage. Poor guy, I bet he wished it was warmer today knowing you were popping by. ” and left it at that.

Don't look too hard...

As I came out of the library myself, I thought I had better take a couple of pics on my iPhone to better show this fine fella off. Imagine me crouching down in various poses taking snaps of a man’s undercarriage while workmen dismantle scaffolding next to me…

Bombs Awaaaay!

So, for those who have seen the photos (please excuse them, cloudy but glarey day) – why is this allowed to be on public display, outside a community area where children play, and yet Rachel Whitwell’s photo shoot (which is sold in a controlled environment) creates so much more controversy?

Personally the sculpture doesn’t bother me, not my cup of tea, but there’s an old saying; “I don’t know art, but I know what I like”. Well I would rather have Rachel (stunning or otherwise) teaching my kids than the sumo with the disproportionate appendage pon my front lawn. So there…

Thanks to Rachel for allowing the use of her photo, and to Steve for the offer of a larger one (!) and legal advice (he would know!)…

Now this would be better outside my library, surely?
